Answers: General Licensing Questions
What is royalty-free music?
Royalty-free means that a one-time payment grants you the right to use the track in an end product without the need for paying extra or recurring fees based on the number of people who view or utilize it.
However, it’s important to be aware that usage restrictions may apply depending on the specific license type you select.
Not all royalty-free licenses are the same. Some only let you use a music track for a single end product, but with Musical Wanderings’ licenses, you can use it in many different projects without paying more. You can thank us later!
What does the term “license” mean in the context of purchasing music?
Purchasing a music license essentially means you’re getting official permission to use someone else’s music in your work, like in commercials or background for videos. The musicians or rights holders still own their music, but they’re letting you use it under specific conditions laid out in the license agreement. Licenses specify how, where, and for what purpose the music can be used, such as in a commercial project, for personal use, or in a public setting. The details of a license can outline restrictions on distribution, reproduction, and public performance, as well as any financial obligations, like royalties or a one-time fee.
What do you mean by track and end product?
The track is/are the music file(s) you get when you purchase a music track from us. The End Product is what you create using that track.
Here’s an example: You buy a relaxing meditation track (Track) and use it as background music for your guided meditation (End Product) that you sell on your website.
What types of licenses are available for your music tracks?
Musical Wanderings offers two types of music licenses: Basic and Premium.
What does non-exclusive mean?
Going for non-exclusive simply means you’re not the only one getting that track. It’s like buying a popular book; plenty of others are reading the same copy, too.
Answers: Usage and Restrictions
Can I use these tracks for commercial purposes?
Yes, you can.
Can I edit the music tracks?
Yes, you can. You can trim, cut, create fade ins/outs, and create loopable versions of the same track.
Can I add lyrics to the music?
No, you cannot. Adding lyrics and redistributing the track is strictly prohibited.
May I use a single license for multiple projects?
Yes, as long as your multiple projects are covered by the same usage terms of the License.
For example, you can buy a Basic license and use the track on a YouTube video where you can monetize it (the music cannot be the main content itself). But if later, you want to broadcast that same project on a theatrical release or radio station, you must purchase a separate Premium license for the same track.
What happens if my project exceeds the usage limits of the license?
If you have a Basic license and wish to broadcast your end product, you must buy the Premium license for that same music track.
Are there any restrictions on how I can use the music tracks?
We want to keep the vibe positive and respectful, so it’s best not to use the music tracks for projects that dive into heavy or sensitive topics. To give you an idea, these are areas like:
- Political issues that can stir up a lot of heat.
- Anything that’s not super respectful or could hurt someone’s feelings, like hate speech or discriminatory content.
- Graphic or explicit content that’s not suitable for all ages or might be too intense for some viewers, including pornography, using or showing drugs, smoking, or anything that’s against the law or just not right in general.
What uses are prohibited with our music tracks?
Please note the following important prohibitions regarding the use of our royalty-free music tracks:
- You are not permitted to use the music tracks on online music channels (YouTube, Rumble, and other video streaming sites) if the primary purpose of the channel is for people to listen to the music in its unaltered form.
- When uploading online, the music must be utilized as background music in videos, games, narrations, or audio-only projects where the focus of the content is not solely the music itself.
These guidelines are in place to ensure that the music is used to enhance the primary content rather than being the main content itself.
This does not apply when the music is used as background music in venues such as gyms, live events, shops, bars, and similar places.
Answers: Purchasing and Downloading
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major debit and credit cards and PayPal.
How will the music track be delivered after purchase?
You’ll receive an email from us with a link to download your music track as soon as you make the purchase. Please be sure to enter your email details correctly. If you do not receive an email from us within the first minute or so, check your spam folder and be sure to whitelist our email.
What format are the music files in?
For both the Basic and Premium licenses, you will receive a compressed folder with the audio files in MP3 (44.1 KHz / 320 Kbps) and WAV (44.1 KHz / 16 bit).
Can I get a refund if the music doesn’t fit my project as expected?
Because the products are digital files, we’re unable to offer refunds. But feel free to download the watermarked preview files to test them in your projects or share them with your clients before making a decision.
Answers: Multiple Clients
I’m a video editor/designer/freelancer/agency. Can I buy one license and use the music across all my client projects?
No. Each license you purchase is valid for only one client. While the license allows you to use the music in unlimited projects, those projects must be for the same client. If you work with multiple clients, you need to purchase a separate license for each client.
Can I use the same license across multiple platforms or media (e.g., for a YouTube video and a podcast) for the same client?
Yes, as long as the projects are for the same client, you can use the license for unlimited projects across different platforms or media. There is no limit to the number of projects you can use the music in, as long as it’s for the same client.
Can my client purchase the license directly instead?
Yes! If you prefer, your client can purchase the license directly from our website. This way, they will hold the rights to use the music in their projects, and you won’t need to purchase a separate license yourself.
Answers: License Specifics
Do I need to credit Musical Wanderings when I use the music?
No, you don’t. But if you’re feeling kind, a little shoutout is always a classy move.
No, you cannot.
Do I need a separate license for a derivative work that includes the music track?
You don’t need a new license for a derivative work that has the music track in it, as long as what you’re doing fits within what the original license allows. If your new creation steps outside those boundaries, then yes, you’ll need to grab the right license for that.
Answers: Legal and Copyright
Who retains the copyright of the music after purchase?
Even after you buy a license, Musical Wanderings keeps the copyright to the music. No matter which license you pick, that part doesn’t change.
What should I do if I receive a copyright claim on a project that uses your music?
Did you get a copyright claim on YouTube for using our music? No stress. Just go ahead and dispute it like usual, making sure to include a copy of your license. If things don’t go as planned and the dispute doesn’t work out, drop us an email. As long as your license is valid, we’ll sort out the copyright claim for you.
Do I have to pay a P.R.O. if my project with music is played in public or broadcasted?
Most of the time, you don’t have to stress about P.R.O. fees for playing music, as the networks that broadcast the music, like TV, radio, or social media platforms, are the ones who pay for it. Rules can vary a lot depending on where you are and which P.R.O. you’re dealing with. So, if you’re scratching your head, wondering if your project counts as a public performance or if you need to shell out more for those rights, the best bet is to get in touch with your local P.R.O. They’ll fill you in on what you need to know.
